|Barroso II, the new Commissioners. Multilingualism merges with Culture and Education|

Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso announced the new Commissioner-designates today.
Androulla Vassiliou from Cyprus takes over the Culture and Education portfolio which will now include the Multilingualism brief. Commissioner Orban is set to return to politics in Romania.
Viviane Reding, from Luxembourg, formerly of DG Information Society goes to Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship. Her portfolio will cover the Fundamental Rights Agency.
Various units have also been assigned to different DGs such as the Citizenship unit which leaves Culture and goes into DG Communication.
Each Commissioner-designate will appear before the European Parliament (11-19th January) in a hearing after which the Parliament decides whether to approve of the appointment or not. (Davyth Hicks, Eurolang-EBLUL 2009)
